Volkswagen Golf GTi Mk2
VW's more sophicticated, larger GTi. Built from 1984 to 1991.
Originally fitted with a 185/60HR14 radial tyre, with the option of a 185/55VR15 on a 15 inch wheel from 1990.
Seen by many as the greatest Volkswagen Golf GTi yet, the Mk2 was launched in 1984 with a 112bhp 1.8-litre 8-valve engine featuring Bosch K-Jetronic electronic fuel injection. At first only a three-door Golf GTi Mk2 was offered, but by the end of the year there was a five-door option too.
The earliest cars featured a single exhaust pipe, but twin pipes were fitted from autumn 1985, a year before the Golf GTi Mk2 16-valve was launched, to sell alongside the 8-valve model. In autumn 1987 a facelift deleted the quarterlight glass in the front doors and reduced the number of grille slats while the GTi 8v switched from K-Jetronic to Digifant fuel injection.
The iconic ‘big-bumper’ GTi appeared in autumn 1989, with front fog lamps and an optional catalytic converter; at the same time the 16v gained power steering but lost its electric windows. In autumn 1991 the run-out 8v GTi arrived, with smoked rear lights, BBS alloy wheels and electric windows; by February 1992 the Golf GTi Mk3 had superseded the Golf GTi Mk2.
