Following on from the GT Coupe the GTE was a radical new concept. Ogle Design's Triplex special Estate car had been based on a Scimitar GT, and the same thinking created the first GTE - a sporting estate car for the masses (not just Prince Phillip). It sold very well indeed, at one point Reliant couldn't cure bodyshells fast enough to meet demand! It utilised the Coupe's Ford engines and gearboxes, and other mechanicals derived from Triumphs etc.

The original SE5 and SE5a models were enlarged to make the SE6, 6a and 6b versions. A significant updating that made the cars much more luxurious, roomy and softer-riding. Which is what the customer base wanted, so it kept selling. There was even a convertible version, the GTC. The running gear was updated as Ford brought out new engines and gearboxes, and other manufacturers like Lancia and Volvo copied the concept.

It was only stopped by a change in fashions, and the fact the underpinnings were starting to feel a little elderly. Middlebridge sold a few modernised examples after the end of production, but tht was it. The sporting estate was no more!
