Morgan Plus 4 1950 to 1961

Morgan's timeless roadster. Built from 1950 to 1969, then again from 1985!

Originally fitted with a 500-15 crossply tyre on a 4.5 inch wide rim, or a 560-15 crossply tyre on a 5 inch wide rim. Suitable radial replacement sizes would be 155R15 on the 4.5 inch rim, and 165R15 on the 5 inch.

When the Morgan Plus 4 was launched in 1951 it featured a 68bhp 2088cc Standard Vanguard engine which gave noticeably perkier performance than the cheaper Morgan 4/4. For those who wanted even more performance, Morgan offered a 90bhp TR2-engined Plus 4 from 1954, then a 100bhp TR3-engined Plus 4 from 1956. The Super Sports from 1961 was even quicker, with its 116bhp tuned TR3A powerplant.

Also in 1961 a 2138cc TR4 engine became optional, but this was standard within a year; by 1968 the Plus 4 had been discontinued. However, Morgan revived the Plus 4 in 1985, with the car now fitted with Fiat twin-cam power, but within three years this powerplant had been superseded by the 2.0-litre Rover M16 unit. In turn this would be replaced by the Rover T16 engine in 1992, at which point the Plus 4 adopted the Plus 8’s wider chassis. The Plus 4 would last in this form until it was discontinued in 2000, only to be resurrected once again in 2004, now with a Ford 2.0-litre engine.
