Mercedes S-class (all W108 & W109 models) 1965 to 1972
The original S-class, even though it wasn't exactly called that at the time, it just used the S suffix on the model designations. The flagship of the Mercedes family, with the top models packed with luxurious technology. Towards the end of the model's life, Mercedes created a muscle-car version, the 300SEL 6.3, with the V8 from the 600 limo. James Hunt had one! In its wake, Mercedes introduced other V8 models to the S-class range, they have a '3.5' suffix on their model designations. The US even got a '4.5.'!
250S, 250SE, 300SE, 280S & 280SEL - These cars were originally fitted with crossply tyres that are equivalent to the modern radial size 185HR14 (which was fitted to later models anyway).
280SE 3.5, 280SEL 3.5, 300SEL, & 300SEL 3.5 - These cars were originally fitted with tyres equivalent to the modern radial size 185VR14 (which was fitted to later models anyway).
300SEL 6.3 - This dragster was originally fitted with a 195VR14 radial tyre (or an F70VR14, which is a US sizing system not often seen in Europe), which is hard to find now. A suitable alternative would be a 205/70VR14, which is a little larger.
