Brand: Avon Tyres, Profile: 70 | Lotus Europa Twin Cam & Special 1971 to 1975
Lotus's foreshadowing of their own Elise gains power, performance and credibility. Both the models had a staggered tyre fitment of 175/70R13 front, and 185/70R13 rear.
Lotus were very on-the-ball in developing their first mid-engined road car. They had quickly improved the early version into the S2, rationalising its production methods, they then turned to fixing its performance shortfalls. The Renault engines were replaced with Lotus's own Twin Cam engine, and the rear body was lowered, making the styling a little less slabby, and improving rear vision. This 'Twin Cam' model then morphed into the 'Special' in 1972, using the Sprint spec, 126bhp engine, and the option of a 5-speed. Lotus's marketing also made the most of the the company's F1 success, by painting special editions in racing colours, and advertising heavily.
