Datsun 240Z

Datsun's iconic 'Z' sportscar, built from 1969 to 1974.

The original standard tyre was a 175HR14 radial. There was also the option of a 195/70HR14 on a wider wheel.

It was in 1969 that the 240Z first went on sale in Japan, but it wouldn’t be until the following year that the US and UK got their first taste of the 240Z; US cars got a four-speed manual gearbox while UK models got five gears. By 1971 the 240Z was available with a Jatco three-speed automatic in some markets, while the rear quarter panel and hatch were redesigned for improved through-flow ventilation. A year later the compression ratio was lowered from 9.0 to 8.8:1, to reduce emissions (and power too).

In 1974 the engine capacity was increased to 2.6 litres, with the car being renamed the 260Z. There was also a new 2+2 bodyshell, with fold-down rear seats. Within a year US buyers got a 2.8-litre 280Z option while UK buyers still got the 260Z, but only in 2+2 form throughout 1975 and 1976. By 1977 the 260Z coupe was on sale again, with improved suspension and a more luxurious specification. The coupé and 2+2 continued alongside each other until the introduction of the 280ZX in 1978.
