The 401 took the 400's excellent mechanicals and took a huge risk on the styling. It's very modern looks and wind-tunnel aerodynamics were state-of-the-art. It worked, especially when the 403 upgrade gained more power. The 402 convertible was very rare and expensive, but the coupes sold well enough to provide Bristol with an undying reputation for sophistication and quality.
