Developed from the earlier (Neue Klasse related) 4-cylinder coupes, the E9 was a dramatic move upmarket. Larger, six-cylinder engines, and extremely attractive styling made these cars a huge success. These initial models were developed into the better known 3-Litre versions, including the CSL.

Standard fitment was a 195/70HR14 radial tyre.
