BMW 2002
BMW's breakthrough, entry-level saloon. Built from 1966 to 1977.
The original standard tyre was a 165R13 radial, with the option of a 185/70R13 from 1971.
The 2002 was the car that put BMW on its path to greatness. Produced between 1968 and 1976, the 2002 sat within the BMW 02 Series alongside the 1602 and 1802. But it was the 2002 that was the best-selling of the various 02 models.
From launch there was a 2002Ti with twin carburettors; in 1971 this was replaced by the extremely collectible 2002 Tii with fuel injection, bigger brakes, stiffer suspension and wider tyres. A five-speed manual gearbox was optional. By far the most collectible edition of all is the 2002 Turbo, built between 1973 and 1974. Just 1672 were made, all with left-hand drive and packing a 170bhp punch.
Along the way there were a few other editions worth noting. The 2002 cabriolet was built by Baur but sold through BMW dealers between 1971 and 1975, while the 2002 Touring was a neat three-door estate made between 1971 and 1974.
